Fair Trade

World Carousel is committed to ethical trade with small-scale artisan cooperatives in the developing world, thereby helping to provide sustainable employment and healthy working conditions for some of the world’s most marginalised people.

Fair trade co-ops work actively to improve the lives of their worker members, paying a fair price for their work and re-investing profits into their communities to fund projects like skills training, health clinics, literacy programs & child care facilities.

The main principles of fair trade are to:

•    create opportunities for disadvantaged & marginalised people to receive a sustainable income
•    pay a fair price for their work – a living wage in the local context
•    build long-term trading relationships to ensure producers’ financial security
•    provide producers with training and market information so they can manage their businesses independently
•    be open to public accountability
•    respect gender equity by always valuing the work of women, ensuring they are paid accordingly and given opportunities to be empowered in their organisations
•    provide a safe and healthy work environment
•    respect the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child by ensuring that the participation of children in the production of fair trade goods (if any) does not adversely affect their well-being, security, educational requirements and need for play
•    adhere to responsible environmental processes
•    promote and respect  cultural diversity and preserve traditional skills
